Moving Towards Misogyny in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest - Literature Essay Samples

Hell yes, we have a quotaWe do keep women out, when we can. We dont want them here — and they dont want them elsewhere, either, whether or not theyll admit it. This statement, issued by an unnamed dean of a medical school in 1960, generated an uproar within the feminist community. Two years later, author Betty Friedan published The Feminine Mystique, a novel that sparked second wave feminism, a political movement focused on women’s right to work and break out of the domestic sphere. These ideals, however, were not without backlash. Many men felt that women would push them out of the workplace and firmly believed in the role of a housewife. The same year The Feminine Mystique was written, Ken Kesey published One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a novel which shows the author’s misogyny through his portrayal of women. The antagonist, Nurse Ratched, is a women in a powerful position who uses her power to belittle and control the patients in the psychiatric ward, thus earning her the nickname â€Å"ball cutter.† The rest of the novel is scattered with female characters that overpower the men in the psychiatric ward.   Kesey uses the sexuality and movement of female characters within the novel to suggest that women in power are unnatural, by depicting powerful women as stiff and tight, and subordinate women as loose and sexual. Through Nurse Ratched’s hidden sexuality and stiff movement, Kesey shows that women in power are unnatural because women must change their natural tendencies in order to have power. Kesey illustrates that women must cover their sexuality for power, because men dominate women through sex. At the beginning of the novel, Miss Ratched covers her body in order to have full power over the ward. However, Kesey establishes Miss Ratched as a sexually appealing person by emphasizing her very large breasts, â€Å"In spite of all her attempts to conceal them in that sexless get-up, you can still make out the evidence of some rather extraordinary breasts† (159). Even though Miss Ratched has appealing physical features, Kesey shows how the men cannot overpower her because her â€Å"sexless get-up† gets in the way of his vision of the natural order of power. Then, towards the end of the novel, McMurphy, who is portrayed as the savior, rips open Miss Ratched’s uniform. Wh en she returns to the ward after the attack, the narrator, Chief Bromden, describes her appearance, â€Å"In spite of its being smaller and tighter and more starched than her old uniforms, it could no longer conceal the fact that she was a woman† (268). When McMurphy violently assaults Nurse Ratched, he is asserting his physical dominance over hers. Kesey sees this as the natural order; women are subordinate to men just because of their bodies. After the attack she can â€Å"no longer conceal the fact† that she is a woman because her masculine facade generated by her â€Å"starched uniform† has been assaulted. Nurse Ratched came to be subordinate as her sexuality became uncovered because she no longer possessed the masculinity Kesey claims is needed for power. To further his ideology that women with power are unnatural, Kesey not only uses Nurse Ratched’s hidden sexuality, but also her mechanical, unnatural movement. To deepen his argument against women in power, Kesey uses several minor characters to compliment Mrs. Ratched by also portraying them as stiff. Because the Combine, or societies institutions, is such as vast concept, Kesey must show other women in positions of power throughout the Combine to strengthen his argument. Kesey first uses a memory of Chief Bromden’s to further illustrate his disillusionment with women unnaturally in the workplace. When a woman comes to Chief Bromden’s home to evaluate the land, Kesey immediately sets up this woman as an antagonist. She is a leader within the Combine set out to destroy the natural lands of the Indian Reservation. Kesey then draws connections between this woman and Miss Ratched through the woman’s outfit when he writes, â€Å"an old white-haired woman in an outfit so stiff and heavy it must be armor plate† (179). Kesey compares Miss Ratched’s nurse attire and this woman’s â€Å"armored plate†   as both stiff and nonsexual. However, this woman’s outfit is more exaggerated having been compared to a knight’s breastplate to ward off sexual attacks from men. The outfit not only hides the women’s sexuality but confines movement and is unnaturally â€Å"heavy† for such a hot day. The woman also wants to destroy the natural landscape of the reservation, making her go against nature both literally and figuratively. Kesey uses stiff, unnatural, and restrictive clothing to again illustrate that women in power are unnatural. Finally, stiffness is also portrayed through Billy’s mother, a woman who is close friends with Miss Ratched and abuses her power as a mother, â€Å"lead [her son] out outside to sit near where I was on the grass. She sat stiff there on the grass† (246).   Kesey places her in a natural setting being unnaturally stiff, just like the woman at the reservation. Usually when people sit outside in the grass, they lay carelessly at ease, but not Billy’s mother whose stiffness seems uncomfortable. Kesey uses her connection to Miss Ratched through to show Billy’s mother’s ultimate power over her son’s life as she holds him back from recovery. After Billy makes his â€Å"recovery† by sleeping with Candy, he kills himself because he cannot face his mother, giving her ultimate power over him. A mother is someone who is supposed to be â€Å"the cure† for their sons or daughters, not the death of them. So not only is her stiffness unnatural, but so is her position as a mother who killed her son. Through Billy’s mother’s stiffness and her position of power in an antagonistic role, Kesey asserts that women shouldn’t hold positions of power because it is clearly unnatural. Throughout minor female characters within the novel, Kesey asserts their unnatural positions of power through covered sexuality and stiff movements that compare to Miss Ratchets’ own. To further his position on women in power, Kesey portrays a prostitute, Candy, with blatant sexuality and loose movement to highlight the natural female position of subordination. Kesey makes it obvious that Candy is the very opposite of Mrs. Ratched when Chief Bromden describes Candy’s clothes, â€Å"it didn’t look like that was near enough material to go around considering what it had to cover† (197). If Nurse Ratched covers herself through her clothing, Candy is just the opposite as she doesn’t even have â€Å"near enough material† to cover her body. Nurse Ratched is used to show Kesey’s belief that it is unnatural for women to be in power, while Candy serves to show the position that Kesey sees as natural for women: subordination. To show his appeal to Candy’s character, Kesey makes Candy the only reason the men can go on the fishing trip. Only one car comes to pick them up, and McMurphy needs a second car to get all the men to the pier. The doctor is so attracted to Candy; he agrees to drive another vehicle. Because of Candy’s body and her revealing clothing, the patients are able to go on the fishing trip that makes them more confident. Through this interaction between the doctor and Candy, Kesey is putting a positive connotation around subordinate and sexual women. Then on the trip, when Candy is on the boat, she insists on having her turn to fish. When she gets a large fish hooked on her line and struggles with holding onto the rod, Chief Bromden describes, â€Å"the reel and the reel cranks knocking against her as the reel line spins out the T-shirt she had on is gone- everybody gawking with the crank of that reel fluttering her breast at such a speech the nipple’s just a red blur! Billy jumps to help† (211). The moment Candy loses power control of her fishing pole, she is seen as sexually desirable by the men who are â€Å"gawking† at her as her shirt flies up. Billy jumps in and exerts his physical dominance over hers, showing her subordination in her natural sexual state. Kesey uses the fishing boat situation to show how it is natural for women to be subordinate to men. Kesey creates a natural, light feeling to the way Candy moves because, as a prostitute, she willingly shows off her body to men. By juxtaposing her occupation and her natural movement, Kesey illustrates the natural position of women as subordinate to men. Through both her movements and sexuality, Kesey uses Candy, a prostitute, as the cure for the patients in the psychiatric ward to show the natural subordination of women.  Ã‚  Ã‚   Throughout the novel, Kesey condemns women in power as unnatural through movement and sexuality. The issue of discrimination of women in the workplace started in the 1960s, but still continues today. Although feminism and misogyny had shaky definitions throughout history, Rebecca West, an influential feminist writer in the mid 20th century, clearly depicted the struggle for women when she wrote, â€Å"I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat.†

Response to Jeffersons Declaration of Independence Essay

The American Declaration of Independence has affected the foundation of the United States more than any other event or document in American history. The Declaration of Independence was the basis for what the country was established on. The document was a way for the colonists to emancipate themselves from the cruelty of King George. This document had such an impacting effect because it was such a new way of bringing up concerns. It was the first of its kind in the history of America in the aspect of liberation of a group of people. Jeffersons text was extremely taboo especially without the support of a reputable country. The laws of nature that Jefferson is referring to in paragraph one are in regards to the laws that human beings have upon birth. The only set laws that humans have to abide by are the Natural Laws that they receive from God which hold true anywhere in the world and to any person in the world. Jeffersons logic, although very genuine, did have a flaw. His beliefs did not match his actions. Jefferson believed in the equality of humans but he was also known for condoning slavery and having slaves himself. Jefferson is rumored to have had a slave mistress, which I find quite interesting. He did want the Western territories to be free of slavery and he has been recorded as being one of the few good slave owners, yet at the same time he does contradict himself by owning slaves and disregarding the institution of slavery. 2. I believe that Jefferson feels that the function of government is to serve the people. Whatever things the people need or demand the government should be able to provide and/or offer its people. The very reason we have man-made governments is to protect our natural rights, not to interfere with them. The power and authority governments have are given with the peoples consent and limited to their protection. The Effects Of Television On Society s Society - 1583 Words

Media is a very powerful source in today’s society, especially, television. Through technological advancements, television has given people the ability to access almost any program at their fingertips. Shows like Dance Moms, So You Think You Can Dance, and Dancing with the Stars acquire exponential ratings and leave quite the impact on their viewers. As such, viewers around the globe, both young and old, are inspired to dance and keep dancing. Dance is an expressive art form, which allows people to communicate through motion rather than words (Moriarty, 2014). In general, dancing leaves a positive impact on society. However, reality TV shows such as Dance Moms, sexually exploit young dancers to maintain viewership and boost†¦show more content†¦Dancing with the Stars is another show that has the tendency to sexually exploit their dancers. Producers’ desire to portray celebrities as sexy and talented lead them in the direction of skimpy costumes and embar rassing dance moves (Koutroumanis, 2011). However, when it is all said and done, the contestants who have signed up for these shows have approved to be exploited in this way. In her essay, Considering the Issue of Sexploitation of Young Women in Dance, Dawn Clark focuses on how girls are subject to subtle and not-so-subtle messages of exploitation based on sex (Clark, 2004). Clark argues that young women are being â€Å"hurried† to grow up, which leads them to be exploited in sexual ways that are potentially detrimental to their health (Clark, 2004). â€Å"Sexploitation† is an unconscious occurrence. The objectification of young dancers ensues simply because the questions of what dance performances communicate or convey have not been raised or considered by choreographers, performers, and spectators (Musil, 2005). Therefore, Clark emphasizes the importance of providing young dancers with the opportunity to explore, experiment, and experience a variety of dance pos sibilities without the risk of exploitation (Clark, 2004). Defining what is meant by sexual exploitation and objectification is important for theShow MoreRelatedThe Effects Of Television On Today s Society1550 Words   |  7 PagesTelevision has greatly evolved since the 1950s, and has become a part of most American households over the years. Thus, Carnival in Brazil eventually incorporated lots of parades, elaborate costumes, music, dancing and balls. I Remember When My Play And How It Compares With Modern...

I Remember When: My Play and how it compares with Modern Theory What is play? When people think of the word play, usually a mental picture of children and various toys enter their minds. However play is so much more than the action of picking up a G.I Joe and playing soldiers. It can be affected by one’s environment, one’s culture, and can even be altered due to changing developmental stages (Let Them Play, 2016). As I look back on my own personal experiences, it is easy to see how these factors even shaped my own play. I can pinpoint my first memories of play to when I was around three to four years of age, to around the time when my younger brother was born. In the two years before my sibling entered the world, I cannot really remember what my play looked like; however once my brother was born, I remember becoming obsessed with baby dolls. As my mother fed Harold, my brother, his formula, I too picked up one of his extra bottles and fed my baby doll. Sometimes I would even leave the doll behind and my brother would become â€Å"my baby† as my mother would hand over the bottle and let me be the one to feed him. However as I grew older I gradually switched from baby dolls to Barbie dolls. By this time my brother was crawling, and at the beginning I allowed him to play dolls with me, instructing him on how to properly dress and act with that particular Barbie. Nonetheless he had no interest in my fantasy world and found it far more interesting to gnaw on my Barbie’s feet andShow MoreRelatedPsychology : Psychodynamic And Behavioral Perspectives1320 Words   |  6 Pages In psychology there are six modern psychological perspectives. Modern Family vs. Leave It to Beaver free essay sample

Television Review There are some slight differences between the families in Leave it to Beaver and Modern Family. Lets start with Leave it to Beaver, created in 1957 with black and white video the main family consisted of a husband and wife, and two sons named Wally and Beaver. The family manner was the man of the house brought in the money while the wife cleaned and served most of her time at home looking after the boys. As I viewed a couple episodes, I saw that both brothers got along very well and had a brotherly love relationship, who were respectful and faithful to there parents. Compared to Modern Family, the family looks out of rhythm. In this show the parents play the same role as in Leave it to Beaver, but the siblings have slightly different behaviors than those of Beaver and Wally. Comparing the siblings together, Beaver and Wally treat their parents with great respect and have family conversations about concerns they are have in their life. We will write a custom essay sample on Modern Family vs. Leave It to Beaver or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page While in Modern Family, there is hardly a close family relationship between anyone in the family. During breakfast, everyone at the table is completely focused on their electronic devices and there are no group discussions. In Leave it to Beaver, the parents are on track with their kids and decisions are made 100% between them with no arguments. On the other hand, Modern Family has a lot of disagreeing involving the parents. There is a lot of talking back to the parents and calling them names like â€Å"daddy-o† rather than a respectful Sir or Madame. All in all the differences in these two families show how family roles have changed over a period of time. It also shows how technology has had a great impact on the world today, and is rapidly taking away from face to face conversations. In other words its an outlook on how much society has changed in a short period of time to go from a conservative outlook to and independent society.

Wonderful Fool Essay Example For Students

Wonderful Fool Essay In order for one to surpass the role of a fool and be unique in the book Wonderful Fool, written by Shusaku Endo, one must be honest, generous and not retaliate with violence whenever they are attacked mentally and physically. Gaston though, seems never to be bothered by his surroundings, which is completely new to him and can cause him or his companions to be in a tough and stressful situation. Gaston is a person who doesnt believe in violence. When Endo who Gaston accompanied, tried to assault him physically, he did not respond to Endo in a way of violence. Gastons open heart and willingness to help others made people to find understanding and sympathy in him. He gained food and accommodation for his willingness to help and kindness towards other people. The current situation he is facing seems to go against him, as he is often embarrassed, laughed at and gets treated differently being a foreigner. Gaston can be called a fool in situations like these, for example when he entered a Japanese eatery with Tomoe and Takamori. He acts like an idiot that is not aware of the trouble he can potentially face and the consequences it brings. But, what makes Gaston surpasses the terms of a fool in these situations is that instead of revenge, he takes it as a n experience and does not fight back to people that mock him. Gaston never discriminates a person and treat them differently than others. He treats every person, ranging from the ones who are nice to him such as Takamori, to ones that get annoyed with him, such as Tomoe and Endo the character equally. Gaston treats them with kindness and respect. He never gets mad at Tomoe and Endo, even though they both were bothered by Gastons foolishness. Gaston also has a characteristic of trusting any person he met along the way in Japan, such as trusting the Sensei in Shibuya for a nights accommodation and fortune telling. Even though Endo the character was harsh on him, he was able to trust others even when they have deceived or betrayed him. This shows how Gaston is a man that is open-minded and carefree. He does not regret his actions; all he cares is to assist people in need, which makes him more than an idiotic fool. Gaston is a very honest person that will express his opinions and feelings. Although the trait is of honesty exists in every human, Gaston resembles it differently. He expresses his opinions whenever he can and does not think the consequences of his expression. But, due to the limited knowledge of Japanese that Gaston has, it sometimes creates a sense of misinterpretation, such as when he expressed his love in Tomoe in a non-affectionate way, which was misunderstood by Tomoe. Tomoe thought love that was expressed by Gaston as affection for her. But, as stated by Gaston earlier in the book when he met the gangsters In Shibuya, he considers everybody as his friend and treats everybody equally. While Gaston was foolish enough to express his feelings verbally without considering how would it impact the receiver of the message, he always sacrifices himself for others and do it with honesty. Gaston also wont ask anything in return for his actions; even a simple Japanese dish called Oden wa s enough for him for saving a prostitute from danger. His honesty and sacrifice supports the idea that Gaston is portrayed as Christ-like. .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a , .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a .postImageUrl , .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a , .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a:hover , .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a:visited , .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a:active { border:0!important; } .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a:active , .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8920f871fa01b713492fcfe0719ff38a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Anna Karenina EssayIn conclusion, Gaston indeed acts like a fool in the book. He is blinded in society and facing changes as he travels around Japan and meets different people along the way. Gastons opinions are often ignored, but he overcomes peoples attitude towards him by being kind, honest, trust and honesty. Gastons treatment towards people is the factor the made him resembles the Christ and surpassing the position of a fool.

The thesis â€Å"Online Company Document Report System† Which is proposal by Jonathan Walker tells about a particular company’s document report. This includes list and records of past and previous related document particularly in different sections of a company such as their annual sales and monthly budgets. This detail can be accessed via the internet and has a limited access for a company personnel only the outside office. The thesis entitled Performance Evaluation for Faculty and Staff of De La Salle Lipa by Eric Ocampo. ,(2007) is a study that used web technology to automate the traditional system of evaluating the of staff and the institution. The study intended to minimize the used of paper and lessen the time consumed when using the traditional way of evaluating which is manual. The study is very timely and significantly mainly because of the technology’s trend. In this study by Dalisay A. ,(2005) entitled â€Å" Network Based Faculty Performance Evaluation for Lyceum Institution of Technology†. This study aimed to implement advance technological application for the betterment of the institution specifically in the evaluation process. In addition is a research done by Puri J. et. Al (2005) entitled â€Å"Network Based Guidance Students information and Personality Evaluation†. This study aimed to computerize the existing guidance information and personality evaluation system of De La Salle Lipa Teriary School Guidance and Counseling center. It offers a new environment of taking personality test and storing information othe than the tradition use of pen and paper and it is through ulilization of computer. The study is very timely because of the technology’s trend. The study will help solve the problems encoundtered by the management. It has also offered alternative ideas that may be helpful for the future studies. The research study done by De Guzman j. et. al (2008) entitled† Network Based Evaluation System for Lipa City Public Colleges† used the network in upgrading the tradition way of the institution into automated one. The study used database management system to manipulate and store data. The study used network to make the process of evaluation faster and more convient. Synthesis The relevant studies will be very useful in performing and developing the project study. In the study of Jonathan Waliker, â€Å"Online Company Document Report System† showed about documents company report. The difference between the developed study and this thesis is that the documents reports system explains about collection of the Company’s financial report both past and previous while the developed study explains about the students enrolled in NSTP. Both studies can be access via internet. The developed study can access by the students who are enrolled in NSTP, the professors of the said subject and mainly by the NSTP coordinator while the â€Å"Online Company Document Report System† has a limited access for a company personnel only the site is protected by password so that unauthorized people may not be able to access. In the study done by Ocampo E.. ,(2007), and in the developed system are not the same because this thesis aimed to computerize the existing system in order to lessen the consumption and too much use of paper and man power in the evaluation processes while the developed system made the existing system online and generate more report. They both used wireless technology to gained what they aimed. Moreover, the study entitled â€Å"Network-Based Faculty Performance Evaluation for Lyceum Institute of Technology†(2005) is different to our study for the system, the study focuses on the importance of improving the evaluation rocess while the developed study focuses on the information of the student who are enrolled in NSTP. However, the study done by Dalisay A, is a network-based system. On the other hand, the study done by Puri J.. ,(2005) proved that automating the evaluation system is beneficial to the management and institution. The study is different in the developed study in such a way that both system manipulate and store data and are upgraded version of manually processing of evaluation. Both are centered on the student information. The study is a network-based system while our developed study are web-based system. The research study done by De Guzman J. ,(2008) entitled â€Å"Network Based Evaluation System for Lipa City Public College† used the network in upgrading the traditional way of the institution into automated one. The developed study is similar in this study because both the project used database management system to manipulate and store data. Developed study used the web while the study used network to make the process of evaluation process of evaluation faster and more convenient. The two studies differ in such a way that the developed study focuses on the student information while Network Based Evaluation System for Lipa City Public College include the cognitive evaluation system and academic performance system. Conceptual Framwork In order to come up with the best and most effective logical approach in designing the system, the proponents gathered all information, which wa taken from different books, interest and idea research material about the information.
